London Concours announces new Golden Age Coupés class

London Concours, presented by Montres Breguet, will display a selection of the most majestic models from a golden era in car design, the late ‘50s and early ‘60s. The event is set to take place from June 6th-8th, 2023, in the immaculate grounds of the Honourable Artillery Company. Nearly 100 of the world’s most desirable privately owned cars will be on display, and an array of these ‘Golden Age Coupés’ will be showcased.

The class, sponsored by Dunhillion, the heritage Scotch Whisky brand, features several timeless designs, including the iconic Jaguar E-Type Series 1, which is widely regarded as the most beautiful car ever made. More than six decades after its debut, this classic British sports car still captivates car enthusiasts with its long, sweeping bonnet and unmistakable silhouette. With its powerful 265bhp 3.8-litre six-cylinder engine, it was one of the fastest machines of its time and is considered one of the greatest British cars of all time.

The class also includes the Aston Martin DB5, another strong contender for the title, famous for its appearances in James Bond films. With its elegant looks designed by Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera and a powerful 282bhp 4.0-litre straight-six engine, it perfectly combines style and performance. This 1964 model is expected to be a major attraction at the London Concours.

Joining these British legends are iconic German automobiles including the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing and Porsche 356 C. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing, born from Mercedes’ W194 race car, took the automotive world by storm with its lightweight tubular-frame construction, direct fuel injection, and extraordinary gullwing doors. Its 212bhp engine produced a top speed of 155mph, making it the fastest production car of its time.

Also on display, the Porsche 356 C from 1964, considered the last and best of Porsche’s old-school models before the 911 era. With distinct Porsche styling and honed road performance, the 356 C is a definitive Porsche history lesson. Don’t miss these legendary German vehicles at the London Concours.

No celebration of Golden Age Coupés would be complete without the presence of an Italian classic, the Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta SWB, a car widely recognized as one of the most beautiful ever created by the renowned Maranello automaker.

Produced from 1959 by Carrozzeria Scaglietti in nearby Modena, the SWB, or Short-Wheelbase, was developed from the successful 250 GT ‘Tour de France’ Berlinetta, which had dominated endurance racing in the 1950s. Its exquisite design, impeccable motorsport pedigree, and rarity, with just over 160 units produced, have made it a highly coveted collector’s item, with units occasionally fetching millions of pounds or dollars.

The Maserati 3500 GTI, a stunning example of Italian craftsmanship, will stand alongside the Ferrari at the London Concours 2023. This model was the first GT car to use an injected engine, introducing the world to the revered GTi badge. Its breathtaking elegance was courtesy of Milanese coachbuilder Carrozzeria Touring, and it featured an advanced construction with aluminium panels over a thin steel frame. With the 3500 GT, it was the first Maserati road car produced in decent volume after the brand withdrew from motorsport in 1957, paving the way for the brand to become one of the world’s most prestigious luxury high-performance manufacturers.

The Honorary Artillery Company will not only host the finest collection of cars but also provide a luxurious experience for guests, with a delectable range of food and drinks. The brand-new Club Concours hospitality experience, engaging live stage discussions, and a selection of luxury brands and boutiques are sure to delight visitors. The London Concours 2023 promises to be the ultimate celebration of automotive excellence and extravagance.
