Long before Mercedes-Benz unveiled the SLS with its signature gullwing doors, tuning shops and enthusiasts sought to capture that unique spirit by creating their own versions based on Mercedes models.
In the early 1980s, German tuning house Styling-Garage revealed a gullwing variant of the W126 S-Class coupe called the 500SGS. Later in the decade, Hartmut Boschert set his sights on the newly launched W124 E-Class.
Boschert’s creation, dubbed the B300 Gullwing, took a 300 CE coupe and fitted the front end from an R129 SL roadster. To accommodate the wild 1.66 meter wide gullwing doors, he moved the C-pillar forward 25 cm and reinforced the sills. The front seats also came from the R129, while twin turbos boosted output to 283 hp.
Debuting at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show with a DM 186,000 price tag, Boschert intended to build 300 examples but only a handful were produced. The example here is the only B300 fitted with gullwing doors. Originally a 300 CE in Astral Silver over black, it was refinished in 1990 in Bornite with a two-tone purple leather interior. The current owner acquired it in 2005.
After nearly 20 years of sympathetic care, in 2023 the B300 saw over €28,000 of mechanical and cosmetic freshening. Featuring at the recent RM Sotherby’s auction in Munich it comes with documents, videos and accessories included, this one-off Boschert captures the spirit of Mercedes tuning in the late ’80s.
