Goodwood Sets a New Standard for Sustainable Racing

Get ready for a ground breaking moment in the world of motorsport! Goodwood is thrilled to reveal that the 2024 Revival will make history by hosting an entire weekend of historic racing fuelled exclusively by sustainable fuel.

Goodwood Sets a New Standard for Sustainable Racing

Building on its commitment to second-hand sustainability, the Revival’s latest announcement takes its Revive & Thrive ethos to new heights. The use of sustainable fuel, with a minimum of 70% advanced sustainable components, is set to redefine the future of classic combustion engine cars, aligning seamlessly with the FIA’s current sustainability standards.

Competitors at Goodwood will now be required to use this environmentally conscious fuel, which acts as a drop-in solution. The best part? No modifications to the cars are necessary, ensuring that race performance remains uncompromised. In fact, the 2023 Revival saw the first sustainably-fueled victory in the Rudge-Whitworth Cup, where a 1925 Bentley Speed Model triumphed over competitors using standard fuel, driven by the skilled pair of Ben Collings and Gareth Graham.

The Revival also marked its debut sustainably-fuelled race with a grid of pre-1966 Porsche 911s battling it out in the Fordwater Trophy. Renowned drivers such as 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button, Goodwood hillclimb record-holder Max Chilton, and nine-time Formula 1 winner Mark Webber showcased the performance capabilities of sustainable fuel.

Adding to the excitement, a panel discussion featuring preparer Richard Tuthill, sustainable fuel developer Anders Hildebrand, and driver Emanuele Pirro explored the role of alternative fuels at the Revival. For those eager to delve into the technology, the full panel discussion is available for viewing and download.

As part of Goodwood’s commitment to a carbon-neutral future, sustainable fuels will be mandated for the Ken Miles Cup and Gordon Spice Trophy at the 81st Members’ Meeting in April 2024. Additionally, the 2024 Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard will witness the return of Electric Avenue, showcasing not only electric motoring but a diverse range of alternative fuels.

Sebastian Vettel, who experienced sustainable fuel at the 2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It’s great that Goodwood is leading the way in promoting the use of sustainable fuels at historic racing events.”

Karun Chandhok, former Formula 1 and Formula E driver, praised Goodwood’s innovative step, emphasizing the importance of showcasing that older high-performance cars can successfully run on new fuels.

Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, commended the Fordwater Trophy for bringing together classic cars and cutting-edge sustainable fuel technology, ensuring the future of historic racing.

Rowan Atkinson, a regular competitor and dedicated supporter of Goodwood, shared his positive experience with synthetic fuel, noting its superior performance compared to traditional pump petrol.

The Duke of Richmond, founder of the Festival of Speed and Goodwood Revival, expressed pride in Goodwood’s illustrious motorsport history and thanked all participants for their support in this ground breaking move towards sustainable racing.
