Coming up for auction on the 12th May 2024 at The Bolesworth Castle May 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction is this impeccably presented RS2000. One of the coveted pre-Custom ‘Broadstripe’ models, instantly recognizable from its successors by the prominent wide tape line running along the body side. Under the current owner’s care, who is only the third UK owner in the car’s 42-year history, it has undergone a comprehensive restoration.
According to the V5C documentation, ‘MLG 617Y’ was manufactured in 1976, making it an early model, and was initially registered in the UK in 1982 after spending its formative years abroad (likely in South Africa, given its right-hand-drive configuration). Upon its return to the UK, the RS2000 was repainted white in 1983, deviating from its original yellow hue. It retains its white finish and is furnished with black cloth upholstery.
Considering the restoration work, the current owner rightfully rates the 2.0-liter engine, five-speed manual transmission, two-door body, paint, and interior as all being in ‘good’ condition. Despite the odometer reading showing a tantalizing 00157, it’s important to note that the odometer display only has five digits, so this figure doesn’t accurately reflect the true mileage. This highly sought-after fast Ford is now available for sale, complete with a full MOT valid until January 2025.
Ford’s much-anticipated MKII RS2000 made its debut at the 1975 Earls Court show. Based on the standard two-door saloon, it represented the pinnacle of luxury among the sporting Escorts of its time, powered by an enhanced version of the 2.0-liter SOHC inline four-cylinder Pinto engine utilized in the Capri, Cortina, and Granada – a four-into-two exhaust manifold coupled with a large-bore exhaust system boosted its output to 110bhp. This power was ample to propel the Escort from 0 to 60mph in 8.5 seconds and achieve a top speed of approximately 110mph. The foam-filled plastic front and flexible rear spoiler were designed to significantly reduce drag.
The custom variant introduced from late 1978 onwards boasted features such as fishnet headrests on Recaro seats, complete door cards, a clock, centre console, 6Jx13in RS alloy wheels, trunk carpeting, remote-control driver’s side mirror, and a black rear body panel. The MKII RS2000 gained lasting fame through its appearance in The Professionals TV series, where a white model with a black roof was skilfully maneuvered by CI5 agent Ray Doyle (played by Martin Shaw).
